At present, China has set up over 50 national high technology development zones.

More than 600 scientific projects at provincial levels have fruited in these zones. The annual growth rate of the zones' major economic index has kept by 60% in ten consecutive years. China's hi-tech development zones have become key economic locomotive for national economy.

The Zhongguancun Science Park in Beijing and some national level of hi-tech development zones in Tianjin, Shanghai, Helongjiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Hubei, Guangdong, Shanxi, Dalian, Xiamen, Qingdao, Shenzhen have been certified as the first group of export bases due to their overall fast development momentum, good hardware and software environment, and fast growth in hi-tech products. Because of the concentration of hi-tech export bases, the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, and Beijing-Tianjin area export over 80% of the national hi-tech products.

In 2002, China's hi-tech product exports account for 20% of the total export volume, further optimising China's export product structure.
